June 12: Ib’ North MHR Hopeful, Afolabi Osunlana, Pledges People-Centred Representation Ahead of 2027

As Nigeria marks the anniversary of June 12 Democracy Day, the Ibadan North Federal Constituency hopeful for the 2027 general elections, Honourable Afolabi Emmanuel Osunlana, has reaffirmed his commitment to people-focused leadership, declaring that the essence of democracy is meaningful representation anchored on service and accountability.
Osunlana, in a statement commemorating the historic date, described June 12 as a reminder that “power truly belongs to the people,” stressing that his political aspiration was driven by a desire to serve rather than wealth, influence, or political backing.

He noted that the democratic ideals associated with the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (M.K.O.) Abiola remain relevant in Nigeria’s political journey, particularly the belief that the will of the people must always be respected.
According to him, the struggle for democracy was built on sacrifice, adding that the significance of June 12 goes beyond remembrance but serves as a guide for leaders and citizens to demand a system where competence, integrity, and genuine service determine leadership choices.
“Democracy died in 1993 but rose again on June 12. As your aspirant for Ibadan North Federal Constituency, I remain committed to making that democratic victory meaningful through representation that listens, acts, and delivers,” he said.
The federal lawmaker hopeful criticised money-driven politics, arguing that mandates secured through financial inducements cannot deliver sustainable development or improve the lives of citizens.

Osunlana stated that his vision was centred on accessible leadership, accountability, and a strong connection with the people of Ibadan North, rather than transactional politics.
He further emphasised that the June 12 experience demonstrated Nigeria’s capacity for unity, noting that citizens across religious, ethnic, and social divides came together in pursuit of hope and a better future.
“As we approach 2027, let us unite once again around the ideals of service, competence, and genuine representation,” he added.
The aspirant maintained that his emergence on the ballot in the 2027 general elections would represent a commitment to the future of Ibadan North, focusing on issues affecting residents, including young people, traders, artisans, professionals, the elderly, and businesses.
“June 12 is not just history; it is an instruction. It teaches us that elections must be determined by competence, not cash; that leaders must remain close to the people, and that democracy must work for everyone,” he stated.
Osunlana also paid tribute to Chief M.K.O. Abiola for his role in Nigeria’s democratic struggle, saying the best way to honour the sacrifices made for democracy is through honest, accountable, and people-oriented leadership.
He called on residents of Ibadan North to support a new direction ahead of 2027, promising representation built on impact, accessibility, and service.
“June 12 was when Nigeria chose hope. In 2027, Ibadan North will choose service over slogans, impact over inducement, and representation over transaction,” he said.
