As Nigerians commemorate Democracy Day on June 12, Ambassador Shakirullah Jimoh Orankan has called for renewed hope, unity, and a stronger commitment to democratic values, stressing that the true essence of democracy goes beyond elections to include security, justice, and improved living conditions for citizens.

In a statement marking the occasion, Orankan described June 12 as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey, honouring the sacrifices of pro-democracy advocates and the legacy of the annulled 1993 presidential election widely associated with the late Chief MKO Abiola.

He noted that while democracy has endured over the years, many Nigerians continue to face challenges that threaten confidence in the system, particularly insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, and inadequate social infrastructure.

According to him, the country’s security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, communal conflicts, and other criminal activities, have continued to affect the lives and livelihoods of citizens across different regions.

He particularly expressed concern over the impact of insecurity on communities in Oyo Central Senatorial District, where residents, according to him, have continued to contend with threats affecting farming, education, businesses, and daily activities.

“Democracy thrives when citizens enjoy security, justice, and opportunities for meaningful progress. The challenges confronting Nigerians today require leadership that is compassionate, accountable, and committed to the welfare of the people,” he stated.

Orankan also highlighted the effects of economic pressures, including rising inflation, increasing cost of living, unemployment, and limited access to essential services, saying these realities have made life difficult for many families.

However, he urged Nigerians not to lose hope, insisting that the democratic process remains a platform for choosing leaders who can address the concerns of the people and deliver purposeful governance.

The Accord Party candidate for Oyo Central Senatorial District, while presenting himself as an advocate for grassroots development, pointed to his previous humanitarian and community-based interventions through the Irorun-Ni Charitable Foundation.

He listed several initiatives, including support for education, healthcare, empowerment programmes for artisans and farmers, construction of religious and educational facilities, establishment of a School of Science in Iroko, Oyo, and efforts towards a university project as part of his commitment to community development.

Orankan, who was recently honoured with the title of Aare Alaranse Adinni of Oyo State, said his vision for representation is anchored on security, economic empowerment, infrastructure development, youth advancement, and improved opportunities for the people.

He called on Nigerians, especially residents of Oyo Central Senatorial District, to continue believing in the possibility of a better future, stressing that the ideals of June 12 can only be achieved through leaders who prioritise service and accountability.

“Together, we can build safer communities, create opportunities, and restore the confidence of the people in democratic governance,” he said.
