Ibadan Students’ Union Disassociates Self From Planned Protest Against Oyo Govt
The national council of Federation of Ibadan Students’ Union(FIBSU) on Friday has disassociated the student’s Union body from the scheduled students mass protest against the government of governor Seyi Makinde, organised by Federation of Oyo State Students’ Union (FOSSU) executives.
In a statement released by FIBSU National President-elect, Aare Olalekan Yusuff Ajibola (Lexiphyll), made available to Westerndailynews, he stated that, thou FIBSU is not supporting state government none payment of bursary but will never be in support of fierce approach to the issue, rather redesign and continue it consultative approach.
Statement read :
The national council of Federation of Ibadan Students’ Union(FIBSU) wishes to state very clearly and carefully that the association as a body will not participate in the planned protest scheduled for September 7, 2020 by the Federation of Oyo State Students’ Union (FOSSU), and thus disassociate self from it.
The association wishes to humbly pass this message to men and women of the association, the FOSSU national leadership and entire public.
The choice of this decision is premeditated on the reality before us. Without being economical with the truth, FIBSU believes that the planned protest is still very unripe.
While FIBSU will not be the spokesperson for the Oyo state government, it is very fair to state that although the demand for payment of bursary is justified, but do not require a fierce approach, yet.
The whole world troubles with COVID-19, that Oyo state and Nigeria still recovers from. The pandemic has caused countless numbers of economic implications and posed open realities before us, to adapt with.
It is quite necessary note that bursary payment is not a too-much-to-ask from the Oyo state government, we feel FOSSU should sue for more diplomacy and civil approach to facilitate the process.
Tracking down the history line, the last administration of the association pursued this way in demand for bursary, but it was an exercise in futility.
However, it is important to state that FIBSU is a strong believer of the might of the students front in demanding for her right, and will always mobilise and support every justified movement and cause in that regard.
To this understanding, and for many other ideal reasons, FIBSU National Council disassociate self from the scheduled protest, note that anyone who attends does so on personal credit and the name of the association should not be impersonated at any level.
FIBSU will continue to monitor the situation and as sister association, we shall work diplomatically and ideally with the FOSSU leadership while it charge the leadership to pursue other available means in demand for bursary.
