The Ido Local Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of schools with the hosting of a security sensitisation programme on the Safe Schools Initiative aimed at strengthening collaboration among stakeholders to protect educational institutions from emerging security threats.
The programme, organised by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, was held at the Ido Local Government Secretariat Hall in Ibadan. It brought together traditional rulers, education stakeholders, security personnel, school administrators, teachers, pupils and students to discuss practical measures for enhancing security in schools.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Chairman of Ido Local Government, Hon. Sheriff Aderemi Adeojo, described the initiative as timely in view of the security challenges confronting schools in parts of the country.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting programmes that promote the safety, welfare and academic development of children across the local government.
Adeojo also commended the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, for his continued support for initiatives that promote peace, security and quality education, noting that the governor’s leadership has continued to strengthen grassroots development across the state.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Area Commander, J Area Command, NSCDC, Ido, ACP Olaoye Adeola, stressed the need for sustained collaboration among security agencies, school administrators, parents, traditional institutions and host communities to safeguard schools against emerging security threats.
Delivering the keynote lecture, Prince Steve Oyebode identified terrorism and insurgency, banditry and mass kidnapping, porous borders, proliferation of arms, socio-economic challenges, weak law enforcement, poor community relations and politically motivated violence as major factors contributing to insecurity in schools.
He noted that although many attacks on schools are externally driven, inadequate internal preparedness often increases the vulnerability of educational institutions during security incidents.
Also speaking, the Onido of Ido, HRH Oba Muritala Babalola, recalled past security challenges experienced within the community and explained how effective collaboration among traditional rulers, security agencies, government and residents had significantly improved the security situation.
He urged schools and members of the public to remain vigilant and provide timely information to security agencies to sustain the gains already recorded.
The programme also featured interactive sessions involving principals, teachers, pupils and students, who were encouraged to remain security conscious, promptly report suspicious activities and contribute to creating safer learning environments.
Participants at the programme unanimously reaffirmed their commitment to protecting schools and ensuring that education thrives in a peaceful and secure atmosphere.
The event was attended by traditional rulers from across Ido Local Government, community leaders, security agencies, education officials and other stakeholders, including the Local Government Secretary, Alhaji Kamorudeen Gbadamosi; the Chief of Staff, Mr Abdulazeez Yahya; the Head of Local Government Administration, Alhaji Aminu Sarafadeen; the Director of Education, Alhaja Durodola Ganiyat; the Oyo State Safe School Unit Coordinator, DCC Eremiokhale Odion Patricia; representatives of the Department of State Services, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun), the Nigeria Union of Teachers and the Conference of Secondary School Principals, among others.
