The federal ministry of youth and sports development has commenced rehabilitation of the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan, Oyo state.

It is understood that the facility has suffered years of neglect, prompting ongoing rehabilitation.

The project is being carried out under the adopt-a-pitch initiative of Sunday Dare, the minister of sports and youth development.

In a statement, the ministry said the move was in line with its drive to upgrade sports infrastructure across the country.

The minister said: “Infrastructure is key in sports growth and development. I had a clear vision when I assumed office to rehabilitate some of these facilities. The welfare of athletes has also remained top priority for me, thus we introduced the adopt-an-athlete and adopt-a-pitch initiatives.”

The Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja has gone on to host every Nigerian national team at all cadres, both male and female, while also hosting national and international club football games.
