Ido APM Chairmanship Candidate Olajide Organises PSM/BIMADEK/ELEGANT Inter-School Football Competition
The Allied People Movement (APM) chairmanship candidate for Ido Local Government, Hon. Adedamola Olajide Elegant, has sponsored an inter-secondary schools football competition in the council as part of efforts to promote youth development, discover grassroots sporting talents and strengthen social interaction among students.
The competition, tagged PSM/BIMADEK/ELEGANT Inter-Secondary Schools Football Competition, is being organised in collaboration with the Elegant Committee and secondary schools in Ido Local Government.
The initiative is also designed to promote the political and development agenda of the APM ahead of the 2027 elections, with the organisers linking the competition to the candidacies of APM presidential candidate, Governor Seyi Makinde; Oyo State governorship candidate, Hon. Bimbo Adekanmbi; and Ido Local Government chairmanship candidate, Hon. Adedamola Olajide Elegant.
According to the organisers, the sponsorship is intended to use sports as a platform for youth engagement and development, while exposing secondary school students to opportunities in football and encouraging values associated with teamwork, discipline, leadership and sportsmanship.
They said the initiative was also aimed at demonstrating the candidates’ stated emphasis on youth development and people-oriented programmes at the grassroots.
The competition is expected to involve secondary schools across Ido Local Government, with each participating school presenting a team of 15 bona fide students duly endorsed by the school authorities.
The tournament will be played on a knockout basis, beginning with the preliminary round and progressing through subsequent stages to the semi-finals and final. Matches that end in a draw will be decided by penalty shootouts.
The organisers said the competition would be conducted in accordance with standard football rules, with strict measures against violence, cheating and other forms of indiscipline.
Only registered players will be allowed to participate, while schools are expected to provide appropriate sportswear and identification for their teams.
Games Masters will officiate the matches, while an organising committee appointed by the Sports Association will supervise the planning, coordination and discipline of the competition. Each participating school will also provide a sports master to oversee its students.
The tournament is expected to run for between two and three weeks, depending on the number of participating schools and the final match schedule. The venue will be an approved football field within Ido Local Government, to be determined by the organising committee.
A total of ₦1.6 million in prize money and awards has been earmarked for the competition, according to the organisers. The winning school will receive a trophy, gold medals and a cash prize of ₦500,000, while the runner-up will receive silver medals and ₦300,000. The third-placed team will receive bronze medals and ₦150,000.
Individual prizes will also be presented, with the Best Player of the Tournament receiving ₦50,000, while the Highest Goal Scorer and Best Goalkeeper will each receive ₦30,000, alongside their medals. Certificates of participation will also be presented to all participating schools.
The organisers said the broader budget would cover player mobilisation, first-aid materials, footballs and other match equipment, referees’ allowances, trophies, medals, certificates, prize money, logistics and other related expenses.
Speaking on the rationale behind the competition, the organisers said sports remained an important avenue for engaging young people positively, promoting healthy lifestyles and identifying talents that could be developed into future professional athletes.
They added that the competition would provide students with constructive extracurricular activities while fostering unity and stronger relationships among secondary schools in Ido Local Government.
The initiative, according to the organisers, is expected to contribute to the physical and moral development of participating students while creating a platform through which young football talents in the local government can gain visibility and encouragement.
