Liverpool FC emerged champions of the latest edition of the Hon. Folajimi Oyekunle (DON) 5-A-Side Youth Football Competition after defeating Manchester United 1-0 in a keenly contested final.
The grassroots football tournament, sponsored by the member representing Ibadan North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Folajimi Oyekunle, popularly known as DON, and hosted by Omo Alhaja Viewing Gaming Arena, attracted talented young footballers from across the constituency in a bid to promote youth development, sportsmanship and community unity.
Liverpool FC clinched the championship trophy alongside the first-place cash prize, while Manchester United finished as runners-up and received the second-place cash prize. Barcelona secured third place and went home with the third-place cash prize, while Arsenal placed fourth.
The competition forms part of a series of five-a-side football tournaments initiated by the federal lawmaker to positively engage young people, discover emerging football talents and foster peaceful coexistence among youths in Ibadan North Federal Constituency.
Speaking after the final match, Hon. Oyekunle congratulated all participating teams for their discipline, commitment and exemplary display of sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
He noted that although Liverpool FC emerged victorious, every participant deserved recognition for demonstrating values such as teamwork, resilience and mutual respect.
“I congratulate every team that took part in this competition. While Liverpool FC emerged champions today, every participant is a winner because you have demonstrated teamwork, discipline, resilience and respect for one another. These are values that extend far beyond the football pitch,” he said.
The lawmaker reaffirmed his commitment to youth empowerment through sports, describing athletics as one of the most effective platforms for nurturing talents and creating opportunities for young people.
“My commitment to our youths goes beyond words. We will continue to create opportunities that inspire, unite and empower them. This football competition is part of our broader vision of keeping our young people productively engaged while identifying and supporting exceptional talents within our constituency,” Oyekunle added.
The tournament ended with the presentation of trophies, medals and cash prizes to the outstanding teams amid celebrations by supporters, football enthusiasts and community members, who commended the lawmaker for his sustained investment in grassroots sports development and youth empowerment across Ibadan North Federal Constituency.
