The governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Oyo State, Mogaji Olusegun Abiodun Agboola, has promised to create 200 jobs in each local government area of the state if elected governor in 2027.

Agboola made the pledge while speaking on Oju Abe, a programme on Omoluabi 97.1 FM, where he outlined his plans for employment generation, security, education and urban planning in the state.

He said the proposed employment initiative was designed to address the economic hardship facing residents and provide support for vulnerable groups, including market men and women and elderly citizens.

According to him, the SDP administration he hopes to lead would prioritise policies aimed at improving the welfare of residents and creating opportunities for people across different age groups.

Agboola, who said he studied law, expressed confidence in his capacity to govern the state, arguing that previous political experience should not be the sole criterion for determining a candidate’s suitability for the office.

He cited Governor Seyi Makinde as an example, noting that the incumbent governor had not previously served as a state governor before assuming office.

The SDP candidate described his party as one with a strong ideological foundation, recalling the administration of former Governor Kolapo Ishola, who governed Oyo State under the Social Democratic Party in the early 1990s.

He said the party remained committed to its founding principles and provided an opportunity for both young and older members to contribute ideas towards governance and party development.

On security, Agboola criticised the state government’s handling of the issue, alleging that he had submitted two proposals to the administration of Governor Makinde on improving security but received no response.

He said the proposals were presented at different times, including one before Makinde assumed office and another after he became governor.

Agboola stressed that security challenges required proactive measures rather than waiting for incidents to occur before taking action.

The governorship hopeful also expressed concern over the state of public education, saying the sector required urgent and comprehensive intervention.

He disclosed that, through the Mafoyaoluwa Foundation, which he said was established by his father and in which he is involved, more than 200 pupils and students had received school bags and books to support their return to school.

However, he said the intervention had only addressed a small part of the challenges confronting education in the state.

Agboola lamented the condition of some public schools, alleging that certain facilities lacked basic infrastructure, including roofs, doors and blackboards.

He also identified poverty, child hawking and inadequate parental support as factors discouraging school attendance, arguing that some parents were compelled by economic circumstances to involve their children in trading and other activities rather than send them to school.

He further called for improved teacher training, curriculum reviews and the adoption of new approaches to teaching and learning.

According to him, an SDP-led government would declare a state of emergency in the education sector to enable stakeholders to assess the challenges and develop practical solutions to improve learning outcomes and vocational skills.

Agboola added that the proposed intervention would go beyond the provision of school materials to address the broader social and economic factors affecting access to education.

On physical development, the SDP candidate expressed concern over what he described as poor urban planning and the lack of proper structures in parts of the state.

He argued that urban and regional planning had become inadequate, resulting in development that did not always follow established planning principles.

Agboola said addressing the challenges of security, education, employment and urban planning would be among the priorities of his administration if elected governor.
