A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State, Alhaji Kamorudeen Ajigbotoloru, has explained the rationale behind the emergence of Hon. Sheriff Adeojo as the party’s consensus candidate for the Ido/Ibarapa Federal Constituency seat ahead of the forthcoming elections.

Speaking during an interview with journalists, Ajigbotoloru stated that the decision to adopt Adeojo was reached unanimously by party leaders and stakeholders in Ido Local Government after their counterparts in Ibarapa East conceded the ticket to Ido in the spirit of fairness and political balance.

He emphasized that once the slot was zoned to Ido, it became the responsibility of leaders within the local government to identify the most credible and capable aspirant among them, rather than allowing external influence to determine the candidate.

“When a position is conceded to a particular local government, it is only right for leaders within that area to decide who best represents their interests. Outsiders should not impose candidates on us,” he said.

Ajigbotoloru further revealed that the selection process involved consultations among recognized party leaders, noting that Adeojo emerged as the preferred choice due to his track record, grassroots connection, and acceptability among stakeholders.

He, however, alleged that some party figures attempted to sideline established leaders during the process, claiming that key forum leaders were excluded from certain meetings. According to him, the party leaders and stakeholders had earlier held a meeting and unanimously endorsed Adeojo.

The PDP stalwart raised concerns over the emergence of another aspirant, said to have recently returned from abroad, arguing that such a candidate lacks the local familiarity and political structure needed to effectively represent the constituency, more so, he has never been identified as a bonafide member of PDP in Ido local government.

“We cannot entrust our mandate to someone we do not know, who does not understand the terrain as well as know us,.

Representation requires a deep understanding of the people and a proven record of service. Hon. Sheriff Adeojo has the experience, the impact, and the achievements we can campaign with,” he added.

Ajigbotoloru warned that imposing an unfamiliar candidate could weaken the party’s chances at the polls, stressing that unity and informed decision-making are critical to electoral success.

While acknowledging that dissenting voices from some party leaders, he questioned their commitment, suggesting that personal interests, financial gain may be driving their actions rather than the collective good of the PDP.

He reaffirmed that the consensus around Adeojo reflects the will of the majority of party leaders and stakeholders in Ido Local Government and expressed confidence that the decision would strengthen the PDP’s chances in the forthcoming election
