All tertiary institution student’s union leaders and Indigenous student associations in Oyo state on Monday met with the new commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Wasilat Adegoke in a bid to revitalize the existing relationship between Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration.
The meeting between Hon. Adegoke and the student union leaders came after the warning protest held by the students last week.
It will be recalled that the state students beseeched the state government office last week with agitations that, the state governor has not been forthcoming with his promises to students as well as seeing students as very important tools for the progress of his administration.
During the visit to the commissioner after last week’s protest, the state student union leaders implored the commissioner to use her office to facilitate their demands from the government.
The student bodies that visited the commissioner include the Federation of Oyo State Students Union, FOSSU NATIONAL council, Federation Of Ibadan Students Union FIBSU, Federation Of Ibarapa Students Association FIBSA, Federation Of Ogbomoso Students Union FOGSU, National Association Of Okeogun Students NAOOS and National Association of Oyo Students NAOS.
Others include all the indigenous students of Oyo state origin and their sister counterparts, the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS), Oyo state JCC as well as various institutions student union presidents the SUGs in Oyo state.
Some of the demands by the students to the state governor include the immediate appointment of a Special Assistant to the governor on Student Matters and approval for the distribution of promised student Buses. Reactivation of Student’s Bursary. Request for Approval and Releases of student’s palliative to cushion the effect of subsidy removal. Improvement of school facilities including lighting up all school campuses. Resolvement of issues surrounding Consultants managing state tertiary institutions. request for adequate mobilization of state students to the NANS National election coming up in November, Reinstatement of LAUTECH student Union Government.
The student bodies also request the frequent attention of the state governor, through timely students, governor Parley, and funding of this year’s International Students Day celebration.
Earlier at the meeting, the students commended Governor Seyi Makinde’s giant strides on developmental projects in the state right from Omintuntun 1.0 and full of optimism going forward in this Omintuntun 2.0 taking a clue on the good note he has started on, thereafter pledged their unquestionable and continuous support for the governor.
The student body leaders also felicitated the new Youth and Sports commissioner, Adegoke for her appointment and urged her to continue to identify herself with the students in the State, and students also advised her to always operate an open door policy.
In her reaction, the commissioner, Adegoke Wasilat appreciated the student leaders for being proactive to their fellow students’ demands and applauded them for being open to consultation and consolidation, she assured them that she would make their demands the subject of discussion with her boss, the governor and promised to work with all concerned stakeholders to ensure their demands are attended to soonest.
