The Oyo State Waste Management Authority (OYWMA), in collaboration with its consultant, Smart Tees Concept, has engaged community leaders in Ido Local Government Area as part of efforts to strengthen environmental sanitation and ensure compliance with the state’s waste management regulations.
The engagement, which brought together members of the Community Development Council (CDC) and other community leaders, focused particularly on the directive requiring every household to have a designated waste bin.
The enforcement of the directive is scheduled to commence on September 1, 2026.
Officials of the Waste Management Authority and Smart Tees Concept, during the meeting, explained the importance of proper waste disposal and urged residents to comply with the directive. They noted that the provision and proper use of household waste bins would contribute significantly to maintaining a cleaner, healthier and safer environment across Ido Local Government.
The community leaders expressed their support for improved environmental sanitation but appealed to the authorities and the consultant to review the registration fee and waste management charges downward.
They also called for special consideration for less-privileged residents and retirees, who they said might find the current charges difficult to afford.
The stakeholders stressed the need for the waste management programme to be affordable and accessible to all residents while ensuring that the objectives of the initiative are achieved.
Speaking at the engagement, the Deputy Director of Environmental Health, Ido Local Government, Mr J. A. Taiwo, emphasised the importance of unity and compliance with the waste management initiative.
Taiwo urged community leaders to support the programme and assist in educating residents on the importance of proper waste disposal and environmental sanitation.
The Local Government Secretary, Alhaji Gbadamosi Kamorudeen, who represented the Local Government Chairman, Hon. Sheriff Aderemi Adeojo, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at improving sanitation and environmental conditions within the local government.
In his remarks, the CDC Chairman, Engr. Tunde Salaudeen, appealed to residents and community members to cooperate with the relevant authorities and support the implementation of the waste management programme.
Salaudeen urged community leaders to intensify sensitisation and educate residents on the initiative, stressing that effective waste management was ultimately aimed at protecting the health, wellbeing and environment of the people.
The engagement ended with a renewed call for collaboration among the Oyo State Waste Management Authority, Smart Tees Concept, Ido Local Government, the CDC, community leaders and residents to ensure the successful implementation of the waste management policy.
Residents were consequently encouraged to obtain and properly maintain their household waste bins ahead of the commencement of enforcement on September 1, 2026, and to cooperate with the relevant authorities in the collective effort to keep Ido Local Government clean, healthy and environmentally safe.
