Oyo Assembly Lawmaker, Bamigboye Appeals To Makinde To Help Rehabilitate Bridge Washed Away By Flood

Following the gradual onset of rain this year, member representing Oriire State Constituency in the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon Jacob Abidoye Bamigboye has appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde to urgently rehabilitate Iluju bridge which was washed away by flood last year in his Orire constituency.

The bridge was destroyed in April, 2021 as a result of a heavy downpour.

Hon Bamigboye made the appeal Tuesday at the plenary in a Matter of urgent public importance.

The Lawmaker hinted that the damaged bridge is the only link to the only secondary school in the area, Community Grammar School, Iluju and it also connects the community to other communities in and outside the Local Government.

According to Hon Bamigboye, the incident occured when the SSS 3 students in Community Grammar School, Iluju were writing their 2021 West African Examination Council, WAEC, and the incident prevented them from gaining access to the school.

He added that the students would have missed their examination that year but for the alternative arrangement made for them to take the papers in Agnes Primary School, Iluju.

” Subsequently, NECO was also written in the same Primary School because the students could not gain access to the Community Grammar School, Iluju.

” Since the incident occured last year, nothing has been done on the said bridge by Government or its representative. With this development, the Iluju Community has been cut off from other communities in the area and residents are suffering to say the least. As the 2022 rains set in , the area poses a great danger for the whole community if urgent action is not taking to repair the damaged bridge. Any heavy downpour now may wreck more havoc as it may lead to heavy flooding.” Hon Bamigboye said further.

In its other resolutions, the Oyo State House of Assembly appealed to the Governor through the State Ministry of Works and Transport to put measures in place not only to rehabilitate the bridge but also to solidify and increase its thickness to ensure its durability.

Its equally called on the Executive arm of Government to direct Ibadan Urban Flood Management Project to see to the channelization of the river to accommodate more volume of water and ensure seamless flow.
