Oyo Assembly Inspects more Road Projects Awarded By Ajimobi
……..Expresses dissatisfaction on Omi- Apata-Bembo Road Construction
Oyo State House of Assembly committee on Works and Transport on Monday inspected additional ongoing road projects at Omi Apata – Bembo and Eleyele-Akufo Eruwa road awarded by the last administration.
Speaking on the level of work done, chairman of the committee, Hon. Olamide Olagoke Akinajo gave a satisfactory remark on the reconstruction of the 10KM Eleyele-Akufo road, saying the contractor had lived up to expectations.
Hon Akinajo however queried why the contractor stopped work on the 48km road linking Akufo to Eruwa Township, which is the second phase of the project awarded for Chinese Global Development And Construction Company in the axis.
Responding, procurement Manager of Chinese Global Development And Construction Company ( CGDCC ) Engr. Soji Adedeji explained that there was a temporarily delay in the Akufo-Eruwa Township road due to inadequacies in the initial design of the road on paper
“from here to Eruwa is 48km and it is approved to be a limited rehabilitation but when we got to work, we detected that the road required reconstruction not rehabilitation, we tried to call back the consultant to site for us to both examine our findings, but no response for months, so we have to go back to the ministry and explained the situation to them, at first they disagreed with us, and asked us to go ahead with what is on paper but later, they reasoned with us. We inspected it all round and now agreed that we should do reconstruction instead of patching bad portions of the road ” Engr. Concluded.
Contributing, a member of the committee, Hon. Akeem Adedibu lawmaker representing Iwajowa state constituency directed the contractor to forward a copy of the developed paper work to the committee for further examination.
” for what we are hearing now, there is discrepancies on the second session of this road, the road is awarded, 58% charges paid, but the contractor said he has to changed what the consultant had designed on paper for him to deliver a good job. The issue now is between the ministry, consultant and the contractor. We will not only examine the consultant paperwork, we will also hear from the ministry and justify their reply with what the contractor has said. Hon. Adedibu stated.
However, during their inspection visit to the reconstruction of Omi Apata – Bembo Road, the house committee on works expressed total dissatifaction over the poor handling of the project .
Vice Chairman of the committee, Hon. Akeem Obadara, lawmaker representing Ibadan North West state constituency frowned at the pace of work done, and said the state government will not hesitate to sanction any contractor who fail to deliver on the agreement.
” we are highly disappointed with the level of work done here, this is unsatisfactory, they gave reasons but not accepted, we had told the contractor, if they are not ready to work, they should leave, the state government will involve a responsible and reliable hand for the job.
“This is just one of the responsibilities of lawmakers, oversight functions,
If we don’t come here, nobody will have observed that this project is an eye saw” . Hon. Obadara added.
The contractor had earlier gave excuses ranging from community matters, issues of paperwork with the ministry and delay in approval as some of the major problems stopping the work on the site.
