In Ibadan, Two Staff Dead, Several Injured In Sumal Foods Protest
Two casual staff of the Sumal Foods Limited in the Oluyole area, Ibadan, Oyo state have been reportedly shot to death, Westendailynews.com reports.
The incident occurred yesterday, Monday, July 1st, 2024 during a staged protest by the staff against the company’s refusal to pay them the palliatives as directed by the federal government and failure to increase salary amidst inflation soars
According to report gathered by Westendailynews.com, the staff claimed that the federal government had last year directed the organized private sector to give their workers palliatives and they should stop paying taxes for six months but the company failed to
to deliver the promised palliatives, prompting the employees to take to the streets in anger.
This also resulted in protests after the company had turned down their request for salary increments as the inflation soared making things very difficult.
As stated, it was reported that the company instead of addressing the staff plights of the workers called for
Policemen, Operation Burst, and Civil defense to stop the protesting staff, which the effort of the engaged security operatives took a tragic turn when the release of gunshots, resulting in the death of two protesters left severely injured.
