An Open Letter To Governor Makinde On Alaafin Throne

Oyo State Government
Agodi, Ibadan
Oyo State, Nigeria

Attention:
His Excellency,
Governor Oluseyi Makinde

Dear Sir,

This letter calls for urgent attention and swift action on the matter of the vacant Alaafin of Oyo throne. The same responsiveness you exhibit when addressing criticisms related to local government autonomy is required in announcing a new Alaafin of Oyo.

As an indigent of the ancient town of Oyo, I find it imperative to highlight the vacuum created by the demise of the Late Oba Adeyemi, Alaafin of Oyo (1971-2022). Over two years have elapsed since his passing, yet his throne remains unoccupied. The Head of Oyo Princes and Princesses (Baba’yaji) has fulfilled his duty by forwarding names of the bonafide princes from the Agunloye clan to the Oyomesi (kingmakers). A screening process was conducted, involving around 68 princes, and a particular prince’s name was forwarded to the Oyo State Government.

However, we understand that the Oyo State Government has refrained from approving this candidate due to numerous allegations, including bribery, dubious academic records, criminal activities, and scamming allegations. If this candidate is unsuitable, we have 67 other young, educated, and patriotic princes who are fit to occupy the esteemed stool. If no similar blemishes are found among the remaining candidates, there should be no further delay in appointing a new Alaafin.

As the first citizen and Chief Security Officer of the state, your decision is paramount. The law empowers you to appoint or disapprove candidates for the throne. It is crucial to restore respect to the position of Alaafin through your intervention, as princes have lost faith in the kingmakers due to alleged fraudulent practices.

Please use your esteemed office to ensure a candidate with unquestionable character emerges. The absence of an Alaafin has cast a shadow over Oyo metropolis, stalling various programs and delaying the appointment of a new Grand Imam, a duty inherently belonging to the Alaafin. Moreover, reports indicate illegal land transactions occurring due to the throne’s vacancy, which may lead to disputes upon the monarch’s ascension.

Your Excellency, I urge you to address this matter promptly and provide us with a King who will make the Oyos and Yorubas proud. Our plight resembles that of an orphan now.

Thank you for your anticipated consideration of this important matter.

Yours sincerely,

Alh Morounfolu Hamza
Sakutu-Sabo, Oyo Town
