The Alliance for Good Governance (A4GG) has raised a number of questions over the 2027 governorship aspiration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in Oyo State, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, describing some aspects of his political record, campaign strategy and leadership outlook as subjects requiring public scrutiny.
In the first instalment of what it described as a series, the group questioned Alli’s political independence, alleging that his close relationship with the Olubadan establishment could influence his ability to take independent political decisions.
A4GG also cited Alli’s recent role in bringing the APC National Chairman to a meeting with the Olubadan, Oba Rasidi Ladoja, as an example of the relationship it was referring to.
The group further alleged that the perceived absence of some influential APC stakeholders from Alli’s campaign was indicative of internal disagreements within the party. It argued that repeated references to being a “party man” could, in its view, reflect the challenges confronting his coalition-building efforts.
On political loyalty, A4GG questioned Alli’s past relationships with political stakeholders, particularly Senator Teslim Folarin, who it described as having previously played an important role in Alli’s political journey.
The group also took aim at what it described as Alli’s public profile, saying critics had derisively referred to him as “Senator Billboard” because, in their assessment, his visibility had not been matched by sufficiently measurable achievements.
A4GG equally questioned Alli’s legislative record, arguing that his experience as a lawyer and senator had yet to translate into what it considered landmark legislative initiatives, vigorous debates or interventions capable of significantly strengthening the voice of his constituency at the National Assembly.
The organisation further claimed that opinion polls and political assessments had allegedly placed Alli behind some of his opponents on issues including popularity and acceptability, although it did not identify the polls or provide specific figures.
Turning to the wider political contest, A4GG said Alli’s repeated references to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) at political gatherings in Ogbomoso suggested that the emergence of other political forces was generating anxiety within his camp.
The group also criticised what it described as Alli’s reported position on the agitation for an Oke-Ogun governorship candidate, arguing that any candidate seeking to govern Oyo State must build bridges across all geopolitical zones.
According to A4GG, telling a particular zone that it is not yet its turn could create unnecessary political divisions in a state with diverse regional interests.
The group also revisited the controversy surrounding a phrase reportedly used during Alli’s political declaration, “Mo ti ja we gbegbe,” saying the expression generated public discussion about the spiritual undertones of his political presentation.
It, however, urged voters to focus on competence, policies, vision and credible leadership rather than political theatrics.
A4GG also raised questions about public perceptions surrounding Alli’s personal conduct, urging the APC candidate to subject aspects of his public and family life to the same level of scrutiny expected of other governorship contenders.
The group referenced a previous controversy involving a young journalist and Alli, saying such incidents could shape voters’ perceptions of a candidate seeking the highest political office in the state.
On the deputy governorship candidate, A4GG questioned whether the APC ticket’s running mate possessed the capacity to independently defend the ticket’s policies and effectively participate in a major live political debate.
It challenged the running mate to demonstrate the ability to engage other candidates in substantive public discourse on major platforms.
The group further argued that Alli’s political style appeared, in its assessment, insufficiently aligned with the expectations of a technology-driven generation increasingly interested in digital communication, innovation, data and modern approaches to governance.
Another issue raised was Alli’s traditional title and responsibilities. A4GG questioned the compatibility of his role within the traditional institution with the demands of partisan executive politics, describing the situation as requiring public clarification.
Finally, the group described Alli as representing an older political generation, arguing that the 2027 election would increasingly place emphasis on youthful energy, innovation and forward-looking leadership.
A4GG stressed that its concerns were intended to contribute to public debate ahead of the 2027 election, promising additional instalments examining other aspects of the political contest.
The group said Oyo voters deserved a thorough assessment of all governorship contenders based on their records, ideas, capacity and suitability to lead the state.
