A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Oyo State and former aide to Governor Seyi Makinde, Bolanle Sarumi, has assured party members that the party will not be taken over by any individual or political bloc, regardless of status or influence.
Sarumi gave the assurance amid rising speculation over possible defections of prominent political figures, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, to the ADC.
Addressing concerns from party executives and members, Sarumi said several leaders across the state had contacted her to express fears that powerful politicians could attempt to hijack the party’s structure or impose candidates ahead of the 2027 general election.
She dismissed the fears, stressing that the ADC in Oyo State remains firmly rooted in grassroots mobilisation and collective leadership. According to her, the party’s independence is safeguarded by the commitment of its members, who fund party activities and uphold discipline and internal democracy across the state’s 33 local government areas.
Sarumi warned that the party would resist any attempt by Governor Makinde or other influential figures to impose candidates, insisting that all primaries would be conducted transparently and without interference. She added that any aspirant, delegate or party executive found engaging in vote-buying or manipulation would face immediate sanctions.
She further assured members that measures had been put in place to prevent internal subversion or betrayal during the primaries, noting that the integrity of the party remains paramount.
“This cannot happen again. We have taken measures to ensure transparency. Such things only happen when executives allow them, and I have confidence in the loyalty and integrity of our leaders and members,” she said.
While reaffirming that the ADC is open to welcoming new members, including high-profile politicians, Sarumi emphasised that such entrants must align with the party’s values and contribute meaningfully, rather than seek to dominate or use money and influence to control its structures.
