The Sabiganna of Iganna Kingdom and Permanent Chairman of the Iwajowa Local Government Traditional Council, His Royal Majesty, Oba (Diamond) Saliu Oyemonla Azeez, Agunloye IV, Ayefemiloye I, has announced the commencement of the Sabiganna’s English Language Proficiency Competition, an educational initiative designed to promote excellence in the use of the English language among students.
According to an official announcement released by the palace to acrossnigerianews.com, the competition will feature a series of academic activities aimed at testing participants’ proficiency in written and spoken English while encouraging healthy intellectual competition.
The competition is scheduled to hold in two phases, with the first phase fixed for December 12, 2026, while the second phase will take place on December 24, 2026.
The organisers disclosed that contestants will be assessed through three major components, namely objective and theory (written) examinations, Spelling Bee, and Symposium (Oral), all designed to evaluate students’ grammar, vocabulary, spelling, communication and public speaking abilities.
The initiative is expected to provide students with a platform to develop confidence in the use of English language, improve their academic performance and strengthen their communication skills, which remain essential for educational advancement and future career opportunities.
Education stakeholders have consistently emphasised the importance of proficiency in the English language as a critical tool for success in academics, leadership and national development. The competition is therefore expected to stimulate greater interest among students in reading, writing and effective oral communication.
The palace urged eligible students, schools, parents and other stakeholders across Iganna and neighbouring communities to prepare for active participation in the competition, describing it as an opportunity to discover and reward academic talents.
