Oyo State Govt. Commences Utilization of CBPP, FMD, Newcastle Vaccines on Livestock

Oyo State began the mass vaccination of animals against major Transboundary Animal Diseases (TADs), as part of a nationwide effort to strengthen animal health services, boost livestock productivity and enhance food security.
The vaccines were procured by the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), a national programme currently being implemented across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.

The L-PRES Legal Adviser, Barrister Ken Agim, representing the National Project coordinator Dr Sanusi Abubakar said the intervention was aimed at controlling the spread of transboundary animal diseases that pose serious threats to livestock production in Nigeria.
He explained that Oyo State was allocated a total of 333,000 doses of vaccines, comprising 50,000 doses of Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP) vaccines, 280,000 doses of Newcastle Disease vaccines for poultry, and 3,000 doses of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccines.
Receiving the vaccines on behalf of the Director-General of the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA) and the State Steering Committee of Oyo L-PRES, the State Project Coordinator, Alhaji Kola Kazeem, described the delivery as a significant boost to animal disease control efforts in the state.
According to him, the vaccines were provided by the Federal Government through the L-PRES project to support Oyo State in controlling animal diseases and improving livestock productivity.

He noted that the intervention aligns with the core objectives of the L-PRES project, which include controlling livestock diseases, improving animal health, enhancing productivity and increasing farmers’ incomes.
“These vaccines will help protect cattle, small ruminants and poultry, safeguard farmers’ livestock assets and ultimately improve livelihoods across the state,” he added.
Alhaji Kazeem further assured that the state would ensure effective distribution and utilisation of the vaccines, adding that the consignment had been formally handed over to the Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, represented at the event by the Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Mrs. L.A Azeez.
Speaking further, the State Project Coordinator explained that the vaccines would specifically help control CBPP, a deadly lung disease affecting cattle, Foot and Mouth Disease, and Newcastle Disease, which poses a major threat to poultry production.
“The overall impact will be healthier animals, increased productivity and higher income for farmers, whose animals remain their most valuable assets,” he said.
In her remarks, Dr. Mrs. L.A Azeez, who received the vaccines on behalf of the Oyo State Commissioner for Agriculture, expressed gratitude to the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development for the timely intervention.
She said the Commissioner had directed that livestock farmers, particularly large-scale cattle rearers, should present their animals in large numbers during the first phase of the vaccination exercise to enable inoculators to reach them effectively.
“For small ruminants such as sheep and goats, they should patiently await their scheduled phase, as arrangements are already in place. Poultry farmers are also assured that vaccines are available to curtail the spread of Newcastle Disease,” she said.
Dr. Azeez reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to working closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure the vaccines are deployed efficiently and reach farmers across Oyo State.
