A group of stakeholders, members, and supporters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Oyo State has rejected the outcome of the party’s governorship primary election held on May 22, 2026, calling on the national leadership of the party to review the exercise and restore what they described as the “stolen mandate” of Chief Luqman Oyebisi Ilaka.

The demand was contained in a communiqué issued on Wednesday and read by Architect Barshir Aremu Lawal, the ADC leader in Saki West Local Government Area, on behalf of concerned stakeholders, party executives, youth and women leaders, ward representatives, and supporters drawn from the 33 local government areas of the state.

Addressing journalists, Lawal maintained that the result announced by the party did not reflect the true wishes of members, insisting that consultations and engagements held across the state before the primary indicated overwhelming support for Ilaka.

According to him, the former Chief of Staff to Governor Seyi Makinde and the Ladilu of Oyo Kingdom emerged as the preferred choice of party faithful owing to his political experience, grassroots appeal, acceptability, and leadership qualities.

The stakeholders alleged that Ilaka won the primary election in 29 of the 33 local government areas but that the officially declared outcome contradicted reports obtained from party structures, local government executives, youth and women leaders, ward officers, and other stakeholders who participated in the process.

“The announced result does not represent the genuine outcome of the gubernatorial primary election conducted in Oyo State,” the communiqué stated.

“The outcome is inconsistent with the democratic principles, transparency, fairness, and internal party democracy which the ADC has consistently preached and promised Nigerians.”

The group further insisted that the majority of ADC members across the state recognise Ilaka as the rightful winner of the governorship primary and pledged to present evidence before any appeal, reconciliation, or investigative panel constituted by the party’s national leadership.

The stakeholders warned that failure to address the grievances raised could erode the confidence of grassroots supporters and negatively affect the party’s electoral prospects ahead of the 2027 general election.

They consequently urged the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and National Executive Committee (NEC) to immediately review the outcome of the primary election and establish an independent panel to investigate complaints arising from the exercise.

The group also called for testimonies from stakeholders and party executives across the affected local government areas to be considered, stressing the need for the party leadership to uphold justice, fairness, and the supremacy of the party constitution.

According to the communiqué, correcting what it described as an injustice would strengthen unity, boost confidence among party members, and enhance the ADC’s chances of electoral success in Oyo State.

The stakeholders further challenged the national leadership of the party to demonstrate its commitment to democratic principles by ensuring that truth and justice prevail.

Reacting to the development, Chief Luqman Oyebisi Ilaka expressed appreciation to party members and supporters across the state for their steadfast support and commitment to the ideals of democracy and fairness.

Ilaka said he remained optimistic that the leadership of the ADC would carefully examine the concerns raised and take appropriate steps to ensure justice in the interest of both the party and democracy.

“Our commitment remains the progress of the ADC and the future of Oyo State. I believe the party leadership will do what is right and ensure fairness for all,” he said.
