Ibarapa East Marks 2025 World Toilet Day, Reaffirms Commitment to Safe Sanitation

Ibarapa East Local Government, in collaboration with UNICEF Lagos Field Office and SATO (a sanitation innovation brand under LIXIL) joined the global community to commemorate the 2025 World Toilet Day at New Motor Park.

The Executive Chairman of Ibarapa East Local Government, Eruwa, Hon. Kazeem Owolabi Arogundade, said the event is centred on the global theme “We Will Always Need the Toilet,” highlighting the continuous and universal importance of safe sanitation.

The occasion brought together government officials, WASH experts, community/religious leaders, school children, market representatives, and partner organisations in a united effort to raise awareness about improving toilet access, sanitation, and the dangers of open defecation.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Chairman of Ibarapa East Local Government, Hon. Kazeem Owolabi Arogundade, ably represented by the Secretary to the Local Government, Evangelist Olaito Oyedele, appreciated UNICEF and SATO for their strong partnership and support to the council’s WASH programmes. He noted that the council remains committed to strengthening sanitation structures across communities, especially in public schools, markets and rural settlements.

According to him, “Sanitation is a lifelong need. From birth to old age, the toilet is a necessity we cannot outgrow. This year’s theme reminds us that investment in toilets is an investment in public health, dignity and development.”

The representative from Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA), Sanitarian Owolabi Ibraheem, in his keynote address, commended the local government for its active involvement in hygiene promotion and community-led sanitation campaigns.

He emphasised that safe toilet access is central to children’s health, women’s safety and disease prevention, adding that RUWASSA will continue to support initiatives that improve rural sanitation and hygiene practices.

The celebration brought together government officials, WASH experts, community leaders, schoolchildren, market representatives, and partner organisations in a united effort to raise awareness about improving toilet access, sanitation, and the dangers of open defecation.

Delivering a goodwill message at the event, the Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Ibarapa East, applauded the partnership among the local government, UNICEF and SATO. The NOA representative emphasised the agency’s continuous role in community sensitisation, behavioural change, communication and grassroots mobilisation.

Community leaders, youth groups and market unions applauded the synergy between the government and development partners, urging sustained support to achieve open defecation–free (ODF) status in Ibarapa East.

The 2025 World Toilet Day celebration ended with a collective pledge to intensify hygiene education, expand access to safe toilets and promote sustainable sanitation for all. As the theme powerfully reminds the world, we will always need the toilet—and securing this basic necessity is essential for a healthy and dignified society.
