Group Urges Makinde, Assembly to Respect Tradition Amid Olubadan Controversy

A political advocacy group, Coalition for Consistent Leadership (CCL), has cautioned the Oyo State House of Assembly against what it described as any attempt to initiate an “impeachment process” against the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, amid rising political tensions in the state.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the group expressed concern over what it called “dangerous political rhetoric and speculation” surrounding the revered traditional institution, warning lawmakers to steer clear of actions capable of destabilising Ibadan’s long-standing chieftaincy system.

The group further alleged that this morning’s denouement by lawmakers under the leadership of the Speaker, Debo Ogundoyin, is a calculated ploy to get at the Olubadan.
The caution comes amid recent claims by former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, who alleged that there were plans within Oyo State’s political circle to remove the monarch.
CCL, in its statement, stressed that the use of the term “impeachment” in relation to a traditional ruler is both legally inaccurate and culturally insensitive, noting that traditional institutions are governed by chieftaincy laws and customs, not constitutional political processes.
“The Oyo State House of Assembly must not allow itself to be drawn into any unconstitutional or culturally inappropriate action that could undermine the sanctity of the Ibadan traditional system,” the statement read.

The group further warned that any perceived attempt to remove the Olubadan, whether through legislative backing or political influence could trigger unrest and erode public trust in both the government and traditional leadership structures.
Reaffirming its commitment to democratic stability and institutional respect, CCL urged political actors to exercise restraint and avoid heating up the polity with unfounded claims or divisive narratives.
“We call on all stakeholders, including the Assembly and the executive arm led by Governor Seyi Makinde, to uphold due process, respect tradition, and prioritise peace in Ibadanland,” the group added.
