BCOS Journalists Selected For Dubawa Fact-Checking Fellowship

Two members of Staff of the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State have been selected as Dubawa Fact-checking Fellows by the Premium Times Centre for Investigative Journalism (PTCIJ).

The BCOS members of Staff, who are also members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Atinuke Seun-Ige and Folashade Seye-Ojo, are among the few applicants selected out of 104 applications.

Speaking on Monday, July 20, 2020, the first day of the scheduled 4 days training for the Fellows, the Project Officer for Dubawa Fact-checking Fellowship, Miss Temilade Onilede, noted that it is to equip Journalists with tools needed in fact-checking; confirming that 29 applicants have been selected for the fellowship out of 104 applicants.

In her welcome address at the start of the 4-day training, the PTCIJ Programme Director, Miss Oluwatosin Alagbe, noted that the programme is aimed at expanding the importance of fact-checking information and its impact on the public; adding that it will strengthen the individual capacity of Journalists to critically examine public statements.

The 29 Journalists and Researchers from academic environment, new media platforms, Radio and Television Stations, were selected from Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra-Leone and Uganda for the year 2020 Dubawa Fact-checking Fellowship and are expected to fact-check, publish or read at least four fact-check stories related to politics and two media literacy articles per month; facilitate the cross publication of at least one fact-check per month in whatever format; and promote fact-checking on all social media, Radio or Television platforms as necessary.

They are also expected to pass-on the knowledge acquired by training their Colleagues on the theory and practice of fact-checking; assisting their Newsroom to set up fact-checking desks prior to or upon completion of the programme.

The Dubawa Fellowship which will last for six moths, is supported by Heinrich Boll Stiftung Foundation, Abuja Office and National Endowment for Democracy.
