Apero Mekunu’s Independence Day Message: Freedom Must Translate into Fairness and Progress
On October 1, 1960, Nigeria gained independence after years of struggle, sacrifice, and resilience. That day was not merely the lowering of a colonial flag and the raising of a new one; it was the birth of a dream a nation built on justice, opportunity, and dignity for all her citizens.
Sixty-five years later, the Apero Mekunu reflects on that historic moment with pride but also with sober reflection. True independence, we believe, is not measured by ceremonies or anniversaries alone, but by the lived experiences of the ordinary Nigerian. It is about lifting the lives of farmers, workers, market traders, and young people who continue to bear the brunt of hardship.
Today, we ask an honest question: have we fully lived the promise of independence? For too many Nigerians, the answer is yet to be found. Poverty, inequality, and lack of opportunity remain obstacles to the freedom that was envisioned in 1960.
