At least three shops were gutted by fire at the Sango area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, resulting in the destruction of goods worth several million naira.
The incident, which occurred around 4:30 a.m. behind the Fart Oil filling station, was reportedly triggered by an electrical spark from a plugged-in freezer. The spark is believed to have ignited combustible materials nearby, leading to a rapid spread of the fire
Eyewitnesses explained
that the affected shops were part of a row of ten prefabricated structures, three of which were completely consumed by the flames before the arrival of firefighters. Items destroyed in the blaze included deep freezers, beverages, electronics, and other valuable merchandise.
Although no lives were lost, the incident has left the shop owners counting their losses and seeking assistance to rebuild.
Confirming the incident, the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Mr. Yemi Akinyinka, said the fire service responded promptly upon receiving the distress call but noted that significant damage had already occurred by the time firefighters arrived.
“Our men did their best to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to the remaining shops. Investigations suggest that the fire started from an electrical fault,” Akinyinka said.
He also advised residents and business owners to ensure all electrical appliances are properly switched off when not in use and to adhere to fire safety regulations to prevent similar occurrences.
Meanwhile, affected traders have appealed to the state government and well-meaning Nigerians for support in rebuilding their businesses.
