Weeks After His Death, Intrigues To Succeed Akinremi Jagaban Begins

….Sarumi, Awoleye, Omotosho, and others eying the seat in PDP

……. Repete, Farouk, Emiola, and others struggling in APC

As family and friends continue mourning the late member of the House of Representatives, representing Ibadan North Federal Constituency, Hon. Olaide Adewale Akinremi, politicians have started calculating for his successor.

Akinremi, 57 ( not 51 ), a member of the All Progressives Congress APC, died at National Hospital, Abuja on July 10 after a brief illness.

His death, no doubt, opened the race for political parties to field candidates for his replacement on the floor of the Green Chamber.

As expected, all interested political parties for the bye-election must conduct valid party primaries as stipulated in section 87(4c) of the Electoral Act and pay close attention to section 285 of the Constitution and section 87 (9) of the Electoral Act on the implications of willful disregard of the provisions of the Constitution, the Electoral Act, and the provisions of the guidelines of a political party for the conduct of party primaries.

Analysts averred that the game to succeed the late lawmaker will largely depend on the candidate presented by each political party, the huge available financial resources, the support based on the candidate presented, and the mechanism to resolve challenges within the political parties in the council, as there is none of all the major political parties in Ibadan North federal constituency are without rancor.

While waiting for the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, to declare the Ibadan North local government federal constituency seat vacant and announce the Timetable and Schedule of Activities after the death of the occupant, Prince Olaide Akinremi Jagaban, the representative seat has now become a wish for political dreamers and jesters.

As of today, every Tom, Dick, and Harry in APC, PDP, and even lesser political parties have signified and still signifying interest in replacing Akinremi, popularly called JAGABAN.

While both popular and unpopular politicians have been secretly showing interest in the vacant rep seat in PDP, our correspondent gathered that many are afraid of the party leadership, especially Governor Seyi Makinde, so as not to be a scapegoat.

According to a source, many of them are waiting patiently, like a Dog served with a big Bone, but need to wait for its owner’s order to eat. “Do not be deceived, they cannot face the governor to discuss their interest,” the source said.

At the moment, the party candidate for the post in 2023 elections, Lanre Sarunmi, former state assembly member and serving deputy chief of staff to Governor Seyi Makinde, Hon. Folajimi Oyekunle, Adeyinka Adeniyi Bibire, lawmaker representing Ibadan North constituency 2, Hon. Gabriel Babajide, Hon. Taiwo Lekan Salami are lobbying to get the nod from governor Seyi Makinde.

Others who are nursing the ambition secretly are; former occupier of the seat, Hon. Abiodun Awoleye, a former chairman of the council, Ademola Omotoso, and present state Commissioner for Women Affairs, Chief Mrs. Toyin Balogun.

Unlike PDP’s interested aspirants who are reading and studying the body language of the party’s overall leader in the state, Governor Seyi Makinde, the APC has already got aspirants close to 20 aspirants.

Our correspondent Akindele Alabi learned that both pretenders and contenders have written and submitted their letters of expression of interest to the party.

Despite the state executive of APC keeping mum, waiting for INEC directives on the bye-election, the party at the local government level had begun to lure almost all the eager aspirants to submit an expression letter with a nonrefundable hundred thousand naira.

Engr Khalil Mustapha Repete, Wasiu Emiola, Accord party returnee Wale Murphy, Farouk Alao, Adekunle Oladeji (Omo Bao) Idris Babatunde Lapade Lapido, two-term state assembly member, Hon. Segun Olaleye (Radical), Yinka Omikunle, Demola Alalade, Doctor Balikis Junaid, Ayinla Musibau Folohunsho, Olaitan Victor, Aderogba (mni), Sahid Aderonmu (symbol) Abdulrasak Abudlganyy (Mr GRA)

Expectations of Ibadan North Constituents and from Political parties.

Part of a legislator’s job in a democracy is to serve constituents by representing their interests in the legislature and by providing a direct link to government, the late lawmaker, Jagaban fit the purpose, in his lifetime, and even after, he was said to be a good representative, fulfilling his promises and performing to expectation, he was no doubt combined the functions of the executive arm to his duties as legislature.

Late Olaide Jagaban’s performance rating is extremely above his colleagues from Oyo state; opposition parties testified to his humanity after his death. He was exceptional as a serving lawmaker, despite the pressure from the people, the late lawmaker continued to ensure that the dividends of democracy were made available.

Now, the Ibadan North federal constituency constituent needs someone who is or is more of late Olaide Akinremi Jagaban. The constituent needs committed and consistent politicians to continue from where the late Akinremi Jagaban stopped with the expectation to surpass it.

The constituents need a unifier, an outgoing, socially confident politician, not an introvert, a politician who feels more comfortable focusing on his or her inner thoughts and ideas rather than listening to his people and knowing what’s happening within him or her.

The constituents want the political parties to present a trusted aspirant as a candidate, not that, he contested in 2023, let’s allow him to re-contest. The humanity, ability to endure and listen to be must be considered.

The constituent wants the political parties to present a candidate who is politically inclined with a robust manifesto.

The Ibadan North local government federal Constituency constituent wants to elect a son of the soil, not again want to be represented by an indigene.

The question…

The death of Prince Olaide Musiliu Akinremi Jagaban had made the House of Representatives seat in Ibadan North Federal Constituency vacant; who among the intending aspirants can really fit in, hold forth for the late lawmaker, complement his outstanding humanity, and be a good representative to Ibadan North constituent.

Who among the intending aspirants of the given ticket who won the election will be a bridge builder like Olaide Akinremi Jagaban?

Who among, them will win the bye-election will be submissive, focused and
will bring home all the dividends of democracy when made available at the federal?

Who among them, if elected, will take the interest and development of his constituency and Ibadanland to heart as the late Akinremi did?

Who among them is truly qualified as the son of the soil to get and win the ticket? Members of the public are patiently waiting until INEC gives a directive on the further steps.
