Saraki Withdraws Support for PDP Ibadan Convention

…….. Calls for Caretaker Committee to Restore Party Unity
Former Senate President and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Distinguished Senator Bukola Saraki, has announced his withdrawal from the planned PDP National Conventionplanned PDP National Convention scheduled to hold in Ibadan on November 15–16, 2025, citing unresolved legal disputes and internal crises threatening the unity of the party.
Saraki, in a statement on Wednesday, expressed concern that proceeding with the convention despite pending litigations would amount to “a waste of time and valuable resources” and could further deepen the existing divisions within the party.
> “As a leader on whose shoulder lies the political weight of the yearnings and aspirations of my people, I cannot in all good conscience take or be part of any action that will jeopardise their aspirations,” Saraki stated.
The former Kwara State governor emphasised that genuine reconciliation among PDP stakeholders must precede any elective convention, warning that failure to do so could undermine the credibility of the process and the party’s preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Offering a solution, Saraki advised the Board of Trustees (BOT) to immediately set up a Caretaker Committee to manage the affairs of the party temporarily, pending the resolution of the disputes and reconciliation of aggrieved factions.
> “My advice to the BOT team is that the only solution available to us now is for the party to set up a Caretaker Committee to steer the affairs of the party for the time being. This must be done in the next two days. This is the path to true reconciliation and stability of the party,” he said.
He further cautioned that no serious politician would risk contesting on the PDP platform under the current uncertain circumstances.
Concluding, Saraki urged the party to reconsider its decision to go ahead with the convention, insisting that it would “only serve to further fuel the present crisis.”
> “Going ahead with the National Convention in Ibadan on 15–16 November 2025 will only serve to further fuel the present crisis. Therefore, going ahead with the Convention as scheduled is a waste of efforts. It does not have my support. It’s not too late to find a win-win solution,” Saraki added.
The development adds a fresh dimension to the ongoing leadership tussle within the PDP, coming barely days after a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the postponement of the convention pending the determination of a suit filed by former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido.
Political observers say Saraki’s stance could influence other senior stakeholders within the party to push for a more conciliatory approach before any major political gathering is convened.
