Lawmakers in 9th Oyo assembly has passed a motion on the need to scrutinize the accounts of Oyo state Independent Electoral Commission ( OYSIEC ).
Hon. Hakeem Adedibu lawmaker representing Iwajowa state constituency who raised the motion during the house plenary session on Thursday said, there is need to examine with care the financial activities of the commission because during the past budget defense session, responses received from OYSIEC officials in respect to the Local Government and Local Government Development Areas election of May , 2018 gave more confusion than clarification.
Adedibu, in view of discrepancies in information giving to the budget committee, urged the house to call on executive secretary of OYSIEC to furnish the Office of the Clerk of the House with relevant documents pertaining to the May, 2018 LGAs and LCDAs election in Oyo state within a week.
He further plea to the House to ask the OYSIEC Executive Secretary and other relevant schedule Officers to appear before the committee of the House for clarifications on issues relating to the conduct of the election of May 2018 into Local Government Areas ( LGs ) and Local Government Council Development Areas ( LCDAs ) of the state.
The speaker of the House, Rt. hon. Debo Ogundoyin in his comment at the plenary said, thou, there is an ongoing case at the law court regarding to OYSIEC Board dissolution but the House of assembly is constitutionally empowered to scrutinize the activities of the OYSIEC.
” we all know, there is a registered case in court, concerning the dissolution of OYSIEC board but we are not calling anyone on the issue, we just need to do what is right and all we need is clarification on their account”, speaker added.
Hon. Ogundoyin therefore, urge the Executive Secretary of OYSIEC and committee in charge of finance to honor the House invitation on the 18th February, 2020 for clarification on some matters regarding to financing of May 28, 2019 Local Government and Local Government Development Areas election.
