PDP Crisis: Makinde’s Faction Rejects Verdict, Heads to Supreme Court

The leadership crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened on Tuesday as the Oyo State governor and the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), led by Turaki, rejected the recent Appeal Court judgment and vowed to challenge it at the Supreme Court.
In a statement issued shortly after the verdict, Ini Ememobong, spokesperson for the PDP faction aligned with Turaki, confirmed that the party’s legal team had been instructed to immediately file an appeal at the nation’s apex court.
According to Ememobong, the decision to head to the Supreme Court was necessary to prevent the adverse consequences that the implementation of the judgment could have on party members.
“The operationalisation of this judgment will, without fail, cause untold hardship on our members,” the statement read. “To avert this, while we are consulting with critical organs of our party on the way forward, we have also instructed our lawyers to immediately take legal steps to appeal the same to the Supreme Court, being the apex court in the land, to conclusively adjudicate on this matter.”
He expressed confidence that the Supreme Court would swiftly resolve the dispute in a manner that strengthens democratic principles and restores clarity within the party’s leadership structure.
Ememobong also used the opportunity to appeal for unity among PDP members, urging them to remain calm and committed while the legal process runs its course.
He assured party faithful that the ongoing legal battle would soon come to an end and that the party would emerge stronger from the crisis.
“Our members should remain united and resolute. This legal battle will soon be over, and we shall be more than conquerors,” he said.
The spokesperson further alleged that the party must be rescued from what he described as “government agents masquerading as opposition leaders,” a remark that highlights the depth of the internal tensions currently facing the PDP.
With the planned appeal now set for the Supreme Court, political observers say the final decision could determine the future direction of the party and shape the balance of power within Nigeria’s opposition politics.
