Oyo State Flags Off 2025 Insecticide-Treated Net Campaign, Distributes Over 5.6 Million Nets to Fight Malaria
Oyo State has officially launched its 2025 Insecticide-Treated Net (ITN) Mass Distribution Campaign, with a strong show of government commitment, stakeholder collaboration, and community mobilisation aimed at reducing the burden of malaria across the state.

The flag-off ceremony, held at the Koladaisi Civic Centre, Agodi, Ibadan, was led by the Wife of the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Her Excellency, Engr. Tamunominini Makinde, who was also officially invested as the Oyo State Net Ambassador. The event was attended by top health officials, development partners, traditional rulers, local government representatives, and civil society groups.
In her keynote address, Engr. Makinde called on all residents to embrace consistent use of insecticide-treated nets, describing each net as “a shield of protection, a promise of life, and a future preserved for our children.”
“We are not just here to distribute nets; we are here to save lives,” she said. “Every net hung and used nightly is a life protected. Malaria does not discriminate; it can affect anyone, and the insecticide-treated net remains one of the most affordable and effective weapons we have against this deadly disease.”
She extended appreciation to Governor Seyi Makinde for his unwavering support and political will, as well as to development partners including USAID/SM-PSM, Malaria Consortium, WHO, BASF, and Corona Management Systems, for their technical and financial contributions.
Also speaking at the ceremony, the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, highlighted the significance of the campaign, stating that over 5.6 million ITNs had been delivered to Oyo State for distribution to more than 2 million households across the 33 local government areas.

“These nets are not poverty relief items,” she said. “They are essential health tools that everyone must use, especially children and pregnant women who are most vulnerable. Using a net is not just an act of prevention, it is a sign of being informed and health-conscious.”
Dr. Ajetunmobi also commended Governor Makinde for the timely release of counterpart funds and for his consistent investment in public health. She assured residents that Oyo State remains one of the best-performing states in malaria prevention based on national indicators, adding that this campaign would further consolidate those gains.

Representing the Global Health Supply Chain-Procurement and Supply Management (GHSC-PSM) project, Jef Imans, Country Director, reaffirmed the commitment of the United States Government to the fight against malaria in Nigeria.
“In 2021, over 4.7 million nets were successfully distributed across Oyo State. This year, we are proud to support the delivery of over 5.6 million nets, valued at $21 million,” he stated. “We commend the Oyo State Government for its unwavering leadership in health. The success of this campaign depends on every household sleeping under a net every night.”
Imans also encouraged campaign staff to ensure transparency and accuracy during distribution, underscoring the importance of proper documentation and equitable access.
The 2025 ITN campaign places special emphasis on grassroots mobilization. Engr. Makinde charged the wives of the 33 local government chairmen, designated as LGA Net Advocates, to replicate the campaign across all wards and communities. She also called on traditional and religious leaders, market associations, youth groups, and security agencies to play active roles in sensitizing the public.
“Let us hang the net, sleep inside the net, and stay alive,” the First Lady declared as she officially flagged off the campaign.
The ceremony concluded with a renewed pledge by all stakeholders to support the vision of a malaria-free Oyo State, working together to ensure the nets reach every corner of the state and are used effectively.
The 2025 ITN Mass Campaign is expected to significantly reduce malaria-related illnesses and deaths, particularly among pregnant women and children, and marks another milestone in Oyo State’s journey toward improved public health outcomes.
