Ad hoc staff of the Oyo State Environmental Vanguard have appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde to intervene in the non-payment of their salaries, alleging that they are owed two months’ wages despite continuing to perform their duties across the state.
The Environmental Vanguard personnel, who were engaged by the Oyo State Ministry of Environment, made the appeal through some workers who spoke on condition of anonymity.
According to the workers, there is no indication that the ministry is preparing to pay the outstanding salaries, a development they said has subjected many of them to severe financial hardship.
The workers alleged that Governor Makinde had already approved and released funds for the payment of their salaries but claimed that the Ministry of Environment had delayed the disbursement. However, the ministry has not publicly responded to the allegation.
They appealed to the governor to urgently intervene and ensure the immediate payment of the outstanding salaries, noting that many of the ad hoc personnel continue to report for duty daily despite their financial difficulties.
Some of the workers said they often carry out their responsibilities without adequate feeding and, in many cases, trek long distances to their duty posts due to a lack of transportation fare.
The Environmental Vanguard personnel play a critical role in supporting the enforcement of environmental sanitation laws across the state. Their responsibilities include preventing illegal dumping of refuse on roads, medians, bridges, streams and other public places, as well as discouraging street trading and other environmental violations.
The workers expressed optimism that the governor’s intervention would lead to the prompt resolution of the issue and enable them to continue discharging their duties effectively.
