Oyo Declares State of Emergency On Indiscriminate Dumping of Refuse, Street Trading, Environmental Pollution

The Oyo State Government has declared a state of emergency on indiscriminate dumping of refuse, street trading, and environmental pollution, signaling a tougher stance on enforcement of environmental laws.

This decision was explained in a released statement following extensive advocacy efforts and investments in waste management infrastructure to ensure  a cleaner and more sustainable environment.

The Commissioner of Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. AbdulMojeed Mogbonjubola, emphasized that while the government has engaged in public awareness campaigns to educate residents on proper waste disposal and the dangers of illegal street trading, stricter enforcement measures will now be implemented.

Mogbonjubola said offenders will face fines, business closures, and prosecution in line with existing environmental laws.

To support compliance, the government has deployed additional waste skip bins at strategic locations, expanded sanitation services, and

strengthened waste collection through the appointment of waste consultants for each local government. Street traders are also being offered alternative locations within designated markets.

“We have listened, educated, and provided solutions, but the time has come for firm action,” Hon. Mogbonjubola stated. “A cleaner Oyo is a collective responsibility, and we will not tolerate practices that undermine public health and urban development.”

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources urged the residents to take advantage of available waste disposal services and comply with environmental regulations to avoid penalties, said the government remains committed to sustainable urban management, called on all stakeholders to play their part in maintaining a livable and healthy state.
