Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Old Irepo Federal Constituency of Oyo State have rejected the outcome of the party’s recent House of Representatives primary election, calling for a fresh and transparent exercise to determine the party’s candidate ahead of the general election.

The aggrieved party members, in a statement circulated among stakeholders and loyalists across the constituency, described the emergence of Hon. Bosun Oladele as the APC candidate as “unacceptable,” insisting that the outcome did not reflect the wishes of party members at the grassroots level in Irepo, Oorelope and Olorunsogo local government areas.

According to the statement, dissatisfaction over the conduct and outcome of the primary election remains widespread, with several party faithful alleging that the process was influenced by directives rather than the collective decision of delegates.

The group further claimed that the controversy surrounding the exercise led to the boycott of the primary by some stakeholders within the constituency.

“There is a general sentiment among members that this is not our choice,” the statement read. “The imposition of a candidate has weakened morale within the party and created room for internal division at a critical time.”

The members maintained that before the primary election, Hon. Badmos Bashir Adeola had enjoyed widespread support among party members and was largely regarded as the preferred aspirant due to his long-standing involvement in party activities and grassroots mobilization.

They noted that Adeola’s record in uniting party members and carrying out people-oriented initiatives had earned him the support of youths, elders and party loyalists across the constituency.

According to them, Adeola remains better positioned to secure electoral victory for the APC in the constituency.

The aggrieved members also warned that failure by the party leadership to address the situation could jeopardize the APC’s chances of retaining the seat in the forthcoming general election.

They alleged that opposition parties were already taking advantage of the internal crisis within the ruling party.

“The opposition is jubilating because they believe APC has chosen a candidate who cannot carry the people along,” the statement added. “This is a serious risk we cannot ignore.”

While reaffirming their loyalty to the APC, the stakeholders urged the party leadership at both the state and national levels to urgently review the outcome of the primary election in the interest of unity and fairness.

They specifically appealed for a fresh primary election to be conducted under close monitoring to ensure transparency, credibility and broad acceptance among party members.

“Our appeal is simple: let the will of the people prevail,” the statement concluded. “If APC truly wants to retain Old Irepo Federal Constituency, then the voices of the grassroots must be respected before it is too late.”
