A socio-accountability group, Monitng, has issued an urgent appeal to the Oyo State government to address the deteriorating condition of Islamic Mission School 1, Bode, Ibadan, which was severely damaged by a recent windstorm.

In a strongly worded statement, Monitng described the school as being in a “deeply troubling state” weeks after the storm tore off the roof of a major classroom block. The group expressed concern that despite the passage of time, no repairs have been undertaken, leaving the structure abandoned and endangering the wellbeing of students and teachers.

“Islamic Mission School 1, Bode, Ibadan, Oyo State, is in a deeply troubling state. A recent windstorm tore off the roof of a key classroom block. Weeks later, nothing has been done. The structure remains abandoned, and pupils are left to suffer the consequences,” the group stated.

With the roof still unrepaired, students have reportedly been forced to study in overcrowded classrooms or remain at home during rainy periods. The damaged block is said to be filled with broken furniture and debris, making it unsafe and unfit for learning.

“It’s unsafe, unfit for learning, and demoralising for both students and teachers,” the group said.

Monitng also highlighted the long-term implications of such neglect, warning that the continued abandonment of the school could have dire consequences for the affected children’s future.

“This neglect puts the future of these children at risk. How can we preach the value of education when we allow them to study in such dehumanising conditions? Their learning environment is failing them — and it shows.”

While acknowledging Governor Seyi Makinde’s contributions to the education sector, including the provision of free textbooks, recruitment of teachers, and various support programmes, Monitng stressed the importance of timely maintenance and repairs in vulnerable schools.

“Governor Seyi Makinde has made notable investments in education: free textbooks, teacher recruitment, and school support programmes. But these efforts must go hand-in-hand with urgent infrastructure repairs in vulnerable schools like this one.”

The group called on both the governor and the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to prioritise the renovation of the damaged classroom block, warning that further delay would only deepen the crisis.

“We are calling on Seyi Makinde and the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board to urgently renovate this classroom block. These pupils cannot be left behind because of a blown-off roof. The longer we wait, the deeper the damage.”

Monitng concluded its appeal by emphasizing the fundamental right of every child to a safe and dignified learning environment.

“Every child deserves a safe and dignified place to learn. Islamic Mission School 1 needs urgent government attention — not tomorrow, but now. Let’s match reforms with action and show these children that their education truly matters.”
