Hon. Prince Akinremi Jagaban statement read :

Covid-19 Pandemic.

The world is currently experiencing what can be referred to as its most challenging phase in recent history, as the novel COVID-19 ravages through it, destabilizing economies and putting a halt to the general order. This has in no small measure brought hardship on humans. As a result, the Federal House of Representatives arrived at specific decisions in the collaborative fight against this pandemic.

The Federal House of Representatives has agreed to donate 100% of our salaries in the next 2 months to the fight against coronavirus. This contribution is committed to the welfare of frontline medical professionals and health workers, as well as to other interventions to provide for the well-being of Nigerians through this difficult time.

It is worthy to also mention that the House of Representatives has called on the Central Bank of Nigeria, as part of it’s policy measures in response to covid-19 outbreak, to immediately direct cash grants to the 774 LGA’s of the nation, to provide food and other essentials to at-risk individuals and communities.

The House Committee on Health, and that on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness, of which I am a member shall diligently oversee the distribution of relief items donated by local and foreign donors to ensure proper management.

At this point, it is important to encourage ourselves not to take the COVID-19 outbreak for granted. We also cannot afford to think that it is peculiar to a certain class or group of people. Currently, Ọ̀yọ́ State ranks the third among states with cases of this pandemic. As such, it is important that we as individuals obey the various instructions from the World Health Organization (WHO), the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the Federal Ministry of Health and other certified health professionals.

I wish His Excellency, Engr. Ṣèyí Mákindé a speedy and total recovery as we continue to keep you in our prayers, and also use this avenue to advise that His Excellency takes the decision to lock down Oyo State. As difficult as this might be, I believe taking this decision will be in the greater good of our people, considering the sporadic rate at which covid-19 spreads.

Also, I commend the Chief Medical Director of the University College Hospital (UCH) Ìbàdàn, Professor Jesse Ọ̀tẹ́gbayọ̀; The Provost, Professor Ezekiel Ọlápàdé-Ọláọ̀pá and the Deputy Provost, Professor Ọbáfúnkẹ́ Dénlóyè of the University of Ìbàdàn College of Medicine, who became victims in the course of seeking a solution to the spread and harm of this pandemic for staying true to their calling as life savers. This is a proof that everyone is a potential victim. I pray they recover in good time, and I believe they will come out of it better and stronger.

Ultimately, I pray that all victims of Covid-19 in Nigeria and World over recovers, and I charge us all as citizens to work in collaboration with agencies in charge to defeat this virus.

May Humanity Prevail Over Coronavirus!

Prince Akínrẹ̀mí Jagaban
MHR, Ìbàdàn North Federal Constituency.
