Former Vice President and two-time presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Atiku, a founding member of the PDP and one of its most prominent figures, conveyed his resignation in a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Jada 1 Ward in Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, dated July 16, 2025.
“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” the letter reads.
The former Vice President expressed deep appreciation for the role the party played in his political journey, stating that serving two terms as Vice President and contesting twice as the party’s presidential flagbearer were significant milestones in his life.
“As a founding father of this esteemed Party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” he wrote.
Atiku, who served as Nigeria’s Vice President between 1999 and 2007, cited irreconcilable differences and a divergence from the party’s founding ideals as the key reasons for his exit.
“I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for,” he noted. “It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged.”
While the letter did not indicate his next political move, speculation is rife about the former Vice President’s future, especially as Nigeria gradually inches closer to another election cycle.
Atiku concluded his resignation letter by wishing the party and its leadership success in their future endeavours.
The development is expected to trigger major realignments within the PDP and across Nigeria’s political space. Party stalwarts and supporters are awaiting an official reaction from the PDP national leadership.
