A United Nations Ambassador and political stakeholder in Oyo State, Mogaji Ambassador Abiola Abdulsabur Olawore, has urged prominent Ibadan traditional title holder, Oloye Abiola Iyiola, the Aare Egbe-Omo Olubadan of Ibadanland, to ensure that public criticism of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration is balanced, objective and supported by facts.
Amb. Olawore, who is the Mogaji Odefunke compound, made the remarks in a statement issued in response to what he described as recent outbursts by Iyiola against the Makinde administration and the governor’s reported presidential ambition.
According to Amb. Olawore, while every Nigerian has the constitutional right to express opinions on governance, Governor Makinde also enjoys the constitutional right to seek any elective office if he chooses.
He maintained that beyond criticism, nation-building requires active participation, noting that the Makinde administration has, over nearly eight years in office, recorded significant achievements in infrastructure development, education, healthcare, security, human capital development and other critical sectors.
Olawore acknowledged that no government is without shortcomings but argued that fairness demands that achievements be recognised alongside existing challenges.
“As a distinguished traditional title holder and respected son of Ibadanland, one would expect public interventions to be balanced, objective and unifying. Constructive criticism is healthy in a democracy, but it should also acknowledge the remarkable strides made by an administration that has transformed many aspects of Oyo State,” he said.
He further encouraged individuals with the passion, ideas and capacity to contribute directly to governance, stressing that meaningful engagement often produces greater results than focusing solely on perceived shortcomings.
On Governor Makinde’s reported future political ambition, Olawore insisted that it remains a constitutional right and cautioned against making allegations of misuse of public resources without credible evidence.
He said claims of diversion of government resources for political purposes should be substantiated with verifiable facts rather than speculation.
Olawore concluded that history would ultimately assess political leaders based on their contributions to society, adding that Governor Makinde’s two-term administration has left visible developmental footprints across Oyo State.
He called on public commentators to ensure that their contributions to political discourse are fair, factual, and reflective of the progress made, while praying for continued peace and development in Oyo State and Nigeria.
