A civic advocator, Akeem Sawalu has called on citizens to actively defend their liberties by making deliberate and informed choices during elections, warning that freedom cannot be preserved through silence, apathy, or blind loyalty.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Akeem Salawu emphasized that every election represents a critical moment of power in which citizens collectively determine whether liberty advances or retreats. It noted that the ballot remains a peaceful but potent instrument for promoting accountability, correcting failed leadership, and reshaping the direction of governance.
According to the Salawu, the act of voting goes beyond selecting individuals for public office, stressing that voters who choose credible leaders are, in effect, defending their rights, demanding responsible leadership, and influencing the values that underpin democratic governance.
He further underscored that democracy flourishes only when citizens recognize voting as a civic responsibility rather than a mere ritual. It added that societies where people vote with conscience and conviction are more likely to build strong institutions that respect liberty, uphold human dignity, and expand opportunities for all.
