The Southwest leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Alhaji Adebisi Olopoeyan
has congratulated Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, for his Supreme Court election victory,
commended the judiciary for strengthening democracy, stating that the ruling showed that “democracy is at work.”

Olopoeyan stated that the affirmation of Abba’s mandate as the duly elected Governor of Kano State by the Supreme Court gives hope for the common man and assures the true independence of the Judiciary. He commented the Chief Justice of Nigeria Olukayode Ariwoola for not interfering in the case.

Delivering judgment on Friday, Justice John Okoro, who led the panel, said the Court of Appeal was wrong in affirming the decision of the tribunal, which held that Yusuf did not win the majority of lawful votes cast in the governorship election of March 18, 2023.

In determining the case, the apex court raised two issues: whether the lower court was right in deducting 165,616 from the votes the Independent National Electoral Commission announced for the governor and whether the lower court could determine the issue of party membership.

In the judgment, Justice Okoro held that the tribunal was wrong in deducting 165,616 votes accrued to Yusuf in the election because the ballot papers were not signed and stamped by officials of INEC.

According to him, Section 71 of the Electoral Act relied upon by the tribunal to deduct the disputed votes does not apply in the instant case.

In a release statement issued to journalists in Ibadan after observing Jumat Prayer, Olopoeyan, while rejoicing with Governor Abba, the people of Kano, also congratulated and acknowledged the resilient leadership of ex-governor, Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and his party leadership.

” The Supreme Court victory for Governor Yusuff Abba is well deserved, it is a total victory for the people of Kano

” What happened was democracy at work and the lower courts gave their various judgments and of course, the Supreme Court gave the final judgment.

” I want to at this point commend the Supreme Court and of course the judiciary generally for making this kind of judgment to strengthen our democracy because it is not only for politicians to work and strengthen democracy. All institutions have their roles to play. So I commend them.” Olopoeyan stated.
