Leadership Struggles In Nigeria: Chief Obafemi Awolowo by KSO

0

Chief Obafemi Awolowo was a nationalist and a Nigerian statesman who played a very important role in our independence.

He was the leader of the Action Group (AG) party, as well as the first Premier of the western region of Nigeria.

Awo, as he was popularly known, was a vibrant leader and under his leadership, he was able to introduce many reforms and development not just to the western region but Nigeria as a whole.

Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s political philosophy was deeply immersed in democracy and all that it represents, he believed that every person should be accorded equal opportunities regardless of their economic and social background.

Baba once said: “The children of the poor you failed to train will never let your children have peace”.

By this, Chief Awolowo noted the dangers of an unequal society and advocated for a socialist approach to governance.

His government policies were fashioned after this philosophy and through that, he was able to introduce to the Western Region of Nigeria;

    • Free primary education for all

    • Free healthcare for all children

    • The first public television station in Africa

    • A public university.

    • Industrialisation of the Western Nigerian Economy (Agriculture, Textile, e.t.c)

    • Scholarships e.t.c

What a great man!

Chief Obafemi Awolowo was principled and disciplined and set an example of leadership for all leaders by placing the greater good of the people first. His exemplary leadership qualities earned him the title “ASIWAJU OMO OODUA”, a title he was the first modern-era individual to be bestowed with.

Friends, I would like us to borrow from Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s model and learn to put others first. When we have more than enough, and we have the capacity to help out others, let us do it for the greater benefit and good of our society.

Neglecting others in need when we are in a position to assist is a dangerous venture in the long run.

Let us all be AWOs.
