A major disaster was averted in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Wednesday evening after a diesel-laden tanker skidded off the road at Jin-Jofes Filling Station, Iwo Road.

The tanker, carrying approximately 50,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (diesel), reportedly lost control around 8:00 pm due to brake failure while navigating a bend, according to eyewitnesses.

Ajadi Oyekunle, one of the witnesses, said, “I was heading home when the incident happened. It could have been disastrous, but the immediate arrival of the state Fire Service averted an explosion.”

Another eyewitness, Bisola Ogungbade, noted that the incident occurred during rush hour. “Thankfully, both the driver and the motor boy were rescued alive. The motor boy had a minor shoulder injury and was taken to a nearby hospital,” she added.

Confirming the incident, Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, said the service received a distress call at exactly 8:07 pm from one Adisa Kazeem.

“Our team, led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent Adeniyi Adesina, arrived promptly and discovered that the DAF trailer with registration number LAGOS: T17 657 LA had veered off the road into a nearby gutter, with diesel spilling from the tank,” Akinwande stated.

Firefighters quickly deployed a chemical foam compound to blanket the area and neutralize the fuel’s flammability, preventing a potential explosion or fire.

Akinwande confirmed that security operatives from the Nigerian Police Force, Akobo Division, and the Amotekun Corps were also on ground to manage the situation. The firefighting operation was completed successfully, and normal traffic resumed on the road by early Thursday morning.

Fire service personnel reportedly returned to their station around 4:12 am.
