The governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Oyo State, Mogaji Olusegun Abiodun Agboola, has criticised the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde over its rejection of the suspension of Dr Saka Adegbite Balogun as the Balogun of Ogbomosoland by the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye.

Balogun’s indefinite suspension was conveyed in a letter personally signed by Oba Olaoye, who attributed the decision to the chief’s alleged refusal to sign an oath of allegiance to the throne.

According to the letter, the oath of allegiance was neither optional nor merely ceremonial but a prerequisite for recognition as a member of the Executive Council of Chiefs of Ogbomosoland.

However, the Oyo State Government rejected the action, describing it as contrary to existing laws governing traditional councils and chieftaincy matters in the state.

The government maintained that the authority to remove a recognised Part II chieftaincy titleholder rested exclusively with the governor.

Reacting to the development, Agboola accused the state government of interfering in traditional affairs and undermining the autonomy of traditional institutions by challenging the monarch’s decision.

He argued that the government’s position amounted to an encroachment on traditional authority, insisting that indigenous institutions should be allowed to manage their internal affairs without what he described as undue government interference.

Agboola also questioned what he considered the government’s attempt to exercise control over traditional institutions, arguing that such involvement undermined the independence of indigenous traditional structures.

He maintained that traditional institutions should be accorded the respect and autonomy necessary to manage their affairs, while questioning the justification for government intervention in a matter arising from the relationship between a traditional ruler and a member of his council of chiefs.
