Rejecting Entitlement Politics – Mr Adelabu, Do you have a Vision for Oyo State or it’s just another Babariga and Agbada Governance?

Residents of Oyo State, the recent declaration by the Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu, echoing the infamous “Emi Lokan” mantra to stake his claim for the 2027 governorship has once again exposed the rot at the heart of our politics.

While ambition is commendable, this entitlement-driven rhetoric arrives amid a crisis of unprecedented proportions, rampant poverty, youth unemployment soaring above 40%, food insecurity gripping our households, and a power sector under his federal watch that leaves Oyo communities in perpetual darkness.

One would expect a leader, aspirant to unveil a bold vision for renewal, a roadmap to lift our youth from despair and empower the Mekunu, the hardworking backbone of Oyo instead, in his address, there was no blueprint for alleviating our people’s afflictions, no roadmap for empowering our teeming youth, and no whisper of how he envisions lifting the Mekunu from the shackles of elite neglect. All we heard were “brags” with a hollow sense of personal prerogative, as if the throne of governance is a birthright rather than a sacred duty to serve.

This is not mere oversight; it is a profound betrayal of the trust placed in leaders like the Minister, who, as overseer of Nigeria’s power portfolio, should be the vanguard against the blackouts that stifle Oyo’s industries and homes. From windstorms toppling transmission towers in April 2025, leaving Lagos and Oyo reeling, to protests in Ibarapa North over near-decade-long outages, and communities like Otu enduring less than 72 hours of electricity in nine months, his tenure raises troubling questions: If power remains a luxury in the state he seeks to lead, how can he credibly promise progress? What specific policies will he deploy to end the epileptic supply plaguing Ibadan and rural Oyo? How does “Emi Lokan” translate to tangible relief for the 62% of registered voters who abstained in 2023, disillusioned by unfulfilled pledges? Will his vision prioritize youth-led agro-exports and tech hubs, or merely perpetuate the cycle of elite self-interest?

Oyo State people- particularly the youth, these are the questions we must demand answers to—not platitudes of turn-taking. The Mekunu and youth of Oyo State will no longer be passive victims of politicians with such a mindset. We reject this era of entitlement and awaken our people to the call for a Ballot Revolution that channels the Agbekoya spirit into democratic action.

My vision under Ilana Mekunu is clear: Tech-driven agricultural exports to create 1 million jobs, e-governance platforms to end corruption and aggressively drive public service delivery, and youth innovation hubs to harness and ship talents in arts, entertainment, and services to the global markets.

Oyo youth and Mekunu, the ball is in your hands! Drop it or Run with it? Decide wisely.
