Oyo Council Chairmen Celebrate State at 50, Hail Five Decades of Unity, Development

Chairmen of the 33 Local Government Areas in Oyo State have joined the government and people of the state to celebrate its Golden Jubilee, describing the past five decades as a period of unity, steady growth, and sustained development.
In a joint statement issued by the Chairman of the Oyo State Local Government Chairmen, Hon. Sikiru Sanda, and the Publicity Secretary, Hon. Ibrahim Akintayo, the council chairmen noted that Oyo State has recorded remarkable progress since its creation on February 3, 1973.

According to the statement, the 50th anniversary presents an opportunity to reflect on the state’s rich history, resilience, and achievements across key sectors. The chairmen expressed delight in celebrating alongside indigenes and residents, while reaffirming a shared commitment to a stronger, more prosperous, and united Oyo State.
They commended the Oyo State Government for the successful opening ceremony of the Oyo State @ 50 celebrations, held at the International Conference Centre (ICC), University of Ibadan, describing the event as colourful, well-organised, and befitting of the Pacesetter State.
The statement highlighted a series of activities lined up for the Golden Jubilee, including a free medical outreach programme targeted at senior citizens aged 50 and above, as well as vulnerable residents across all 33 local government areas.
Other activities already held include a film show by renowned filmmaker Kunle Afolayan, screened simultaneously across zonal centres in the state, as well as a carnival and local government parade, and a music concert held on Wednesday.

Upcoming events, according to the statement, include a public lecture and symposium, a novelty match, and the grand Golden Jubilee Gala and Award Night scheduled for Tuesday, February 3.
While celebrating the milestone, the council chairmen praised Governor Seyi Makinde for approving what they described as a befitting and inclusive celebration, noting that the programmes were deliberately designed to impact residents directly at the grassroots.
Speaking on the governor’s administration, they stated that Governor Makinde’s Five-Point Agenda has remained the cornerstone of accelerated development in Oyo State, delivering measurable progress across key sectors and significantly improving the quality of life of residents since he assumed office.
They added that as Oyo State consolidates the gains of accelerated development, the Five-Point Agenda continues to serve as a defining blueprint for governance—fostering resilience, driving inclusive growth, and positioning the state on a sustainable path of progress and prosperity.
The council chairmen concluded by congratulating the government and people of Oyo State on the Golden Jubilee, expressing optimism that the coming decades would usher in even greater unity, development, and shared prosperity.
