Oyo @50: Makinde Has Laid Solid Foundation for Improved Healthcare Delivery – Health Commissioner

As Oyo State marks its golden jubilee, the transformational leadership style of Governor Seyi Makinde, FNSE, has significantly repositioned the state’s healthcare system, laying a solid foundation for sustainable growth and continuity.
This was disclosed by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, while monitoring the free medical outreach organised across the 33 local government areas of the state as part of activities marking Oyo State @50.

Dr. Ajetunmobi noted that healthcare delivery remains one of the top priorities of Governor Makinde’s administration and has continued to enjoy strong commitment from the people-centred government.
While addressing beneficiaries at some of the inspected Primary Health Care Centres (PHCs) within Ibadan, the Commissioner commended the impressive turnout of elderly persons and other residents in need, who are the primary targets of the outreach. She urged beneficiaries to return to the health centres for follow-up treatment where necessary, explaining that not all cases may be concluded in one day.
“We are celebrating Oyo State at 50, and this free medical outreach is part of the activities lined up to commemorate the anniversary. Doctors will attend to complaints, while those requiring tests, drugs and counselling will be attended to accordingly. However, cases that cannot be completed today should return to this same centre for follow-up treatment,” she said.
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of the Oyo State Primary Health Care Board, Dr. Muyideen Babatunde Olatunji, commended Governor Makinde’s intentional approach to healthcare delivery, describing it as one of the strongest pillars of his administration.

He revealed that across 351 wards in the state, each now boasts of a standard PHC facility, supported by the recruitment of 3,933 healthcare personnel deployed to various facilities statewide. According to him, such large-scale recruitment at the primary healthcare level had never been witnessed since the creation of Oyo State, not to mention improvements recorded at the secondary and tertiary healthcare levels.
He added that eight years ago, many residents could not confidently bring family members to PHCs for treatment, a situation that has now significantly changed.
Dr. Olatunji expressed optimism that healthcare delivery in the state would continue to improve, describing the Oyo State @50 celebration as a defining moment in the state’s healthcare journey.
In his remarks, the Executive Chairman of Oluyole Local Government, Engr. Akeem Olatunji, described healthcare delivery in Oyo State as second to none, noting that the administration has consistently placed the health of the people at the front burner. He stated that the free medical outreach, replicated across all local governments, was not a one-off exercise but a reflection of ongoing healthcare interventions in the state.
Similarly, the Chairman of the Ward Development Committee (WDC), Oluyole Local Government, Alhaji Gbolagade, appreciated the government’s efforts in providing accessible basic healthcare services, including the OYSHIA package, and prayed for continued progress.
One of the beneficiaries, Mr. Wasiu Olawale, a retired civil servant, commended the government for the laudable initiative and prayed for sustained development in Oyo State.
The monitoring team included the Permanent Secretary and other Directors in the Ministry, who also monitored the exercise both within and outside Ibadan.
