A chieftain of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, Alhaji Adebisi Olopoeniyan, on Wednesday, chided those claiming that crisis in the Southwest zone of the PDP is aimed at destabilizting the party with the ultimate objective of rooting for the National Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu’s presidential ambition in 2023.
Rumours are rife that former Governor Ayodele Fayose and Eddy Olafeso are scrambling for the soul of the PDP with a view to using the platform to support Tinubu’s ambition.
Speaking with journalists in Ibadan, Olopoeniyan described those carrying the rumours as mischievous and politically naive.
Olopoeniyan, who maintained that anybody carrying such rumours is politically nobody explained what happened at the meeting the Eddy Olafeso faction held with former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Dr. Saka Balogun where they insisted that he agreement made with Olafeso to return to his office must be fulfilled.
He said:” At the last meeting where former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Dr. Saka Balogun and others, we told them to tell Governor Seyi Makinde that nobody is dragging the leadership of the party with him. But he must fulfil the agreement made in the party. We insisted on Eddy Olafeso as the zonal chairman of the party.
” I didn’t know of national convention and chairmanship candidates but, PDP Southwest zonal congress, it is only Eddy Olafeso contesting as chairman and only him we know as consensus candidate for the chairmanship position, we had not seen anybody with an intention, even governor Makinde didn’t have any candidate and if he has, let him bring his own candidate.
“We told them that in Ekiti State, they must pick two persons from the Abiodun Olujimi faction and Fayose faction. And the same thing should be done in Oyo and Lagos States.
“I belong to the faction of Eddy Olafeso. I don’t know of any other faction”.
While reacting the the rumour of romance with Tinubu, the Oyo State PDP stalwart said: “The stories you will hear from those who are new in PDP now are some have gone to APC, some are working for Tinubu and others, just to demean others. How does Ashiwaju’s matter relate with PDP? Did Ashiwaju send anybody to the meeting? Anybody saying that is politically naive and mischievous. Those of us in the Olafeso faction sat down and former Governor Oyinlola held a meeting with us. Dr. Saka Balogun was there. Are they also working for Tinubu? Nobody who is politically conscious would say that a meeting where Oyinlola, Fayose and others present was to work for Tinubu.
“Anybody saying that is politically nobody. How does that look like we are working for Tinubu’s ambition . They are saying that to portray us before others as APC members. How do Fayose, Olafeso and I look like APC?”
Olopoeniyan however said he liked Tinubu as a successful Yoruba man.
