Nigerian Society Of Pharmacognosy Holds 15th Scientific Conference: To Honour Former INEC Chairman
Members of the Nigerian Society of Pharmacognosy, NSP, within and outside Nigeria are expected to converge on the University of Jos, Plateau State for the 31st AGM and 15th Scientific Conference of the society.
At a virtual press conference held for the event coming up between Wednesday 24th to Friday 26th March 2021, national president of the society, Professor Jones O Moody hinted that the theme of the conference would focus on “ Mainstreaming herbal medicine into the 21st century healthcare system in Nigeria”
Professor Moody said the Society, through the conference, is committed to collaborating with other relevant agencies in and outside Nigeria, to promote and develop traditional medicine, medicinal plant research and utilization, with a view to alleviating the misery of several diseases facing populations in developing economies in Africa.
The NSP National President said “apart from plenary lectures on the theme by seasoned speakers, there will be over 150 selected peer reviewed oral and poster paper presentations on various topics by participants”
He explained that the papers will be published, after further review in the society’s organ, “Journal of Natural Products and Medicine”
“Another very important and significant feature in this year’s conference is the induction of twenty deserving members into the Fellowship of the Nigerian Society of Pharmacognosy (FNSPcog) in recognition of their outstanding scholarship and service to the Society” He said
He further stated that “According to records, this will be the second time such awards are made in the 39 year history of the society. Making the list are nine posthumous awards as well as at least three living former Vice Chancellors and a former INEC Chairman, Professor Maurice Iwu who are all members of the Society, among others”.
Professor Moody highlighted some of the objectives of the Nigerian Society of Pharmacognosy, NSP, to include, making pharmacognosy more meaningful and useful to the community, finding effective ways of stimulating the interest of Governments and liaising with nationally and internationally related organizations or individuals such as the WHO, Scientific, Technical and Research Commission of the African Union (OAU/STRC), Traditional Medical Practitioners in practicalising medicinal plant research findings.
Pharmacognosy, which is the science of biogenic or nature-derived pharmaceuticals or poisons, deals with the cultivation, commerce, chemistry, genetics, quality control, biological activities of naturally occurring drugs of plant, animal and mineral origin.
