The Association of Igbo Residents in Ibadan has reaffirmed its support for Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, while condemning what it described as attempts by external political actors to destabilise the state.

Addressing a press conference on Saturday, the group headed by Barr Ndo Ofurenna, expressed concern over recent political developments and statements allegedly linked to former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, which it said were capable of creating unnecessary tension in Oyo State.

The association accused Fayose of interfering in matters outside his constitutional jurisdiction and attempting to import political disputes into Oyo State. It further alleged that his actions, including purported alliances with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, were aimed at undermining the Makinde administration.

The group also raised concerns over what it described as attempts to politicise the revered Olubadan Stool, warning that the institution must remain sacred and free from partisan politics.Unfortunately, hat individuals without constitutional roles in Oyo State are seeking to interfere in its affairs and drag respected traditional institutions into political controversies,” the group said.

Reacting to comments allegedly made by Fayose during a recent visit to Ibadan and at a political gathering in Abuja, the association criticised his remarks against Governor Makinde, describing them as provocative and unwarranted. It questioned his interest in the succession process in Oyo State, insisting that candidate emergence must follow provisions of the Electoral Act through consensus or primaries.

The association also dismissed alleged impeachment plots against Makinde as baseless distractions, maintaining that the governor has continued to enjoy public confidence due to his administration’s performance.

Highlighting achievements in infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, and workers’ welfare, the group said the Makinde-led government has demonstrated transparency, inclusiveness, and commitment to sustainable development.

It added that Oyo State has witnessed relative peace, religious harmony, and ethnic inclusiveness under the current administration, making it conducive for all residents, including the Igbo community.

The association urged residents to remain calm and focused on development, warning against divisive rhetoric and politically motivated rumours. It also called on leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to caution members whose statements could deepen internal tensions.

The group further appealed to traditional and political leaders in the state to safeguard its peace and resist external manipulation.

Reaffirming its stance, the association declared its unwavering support for Governor Makinde, stressing that Oyo State remains committed to unity, stability, and continued progress.
