From Outskirts to City Centre, Apero Mekunu Takes Civic Awareness Across Ibadan
The socio-political movement, Apero Mekunu, has continued its grassroots engagement drive across Oyo State, extending its radio programme awareness rally to communities on the outskirts and the urban core of Ibadan.
Days three and four of the rally saw the movement traverse contrasting environments—from the quieter neighbourhoods of Akinyele and Ido Local Government Areas to the densely populated and high-energy districts of Ibadan North East and Ibadan South East. Despite the differing settings, the objective remained consistent: to take civic conversations directly to the people and create a platform that reflects their voices and lived realities.
In Akinyele and Ido, engagements were marked by calm, reflective discussions. Residents, including farmers, traders and young people, spoke candidly about access to information, economic opportunities and the need for leaders who are more responsive. Concerns around rising transport costs, livelihoods and a sense of exclusion from public discourse featured prominently.
The tone shifted noticeably in Ibadan North East and South East, where the rally was met with heightened energy and intense participation. Traders paused their activities, commuters engaged between trips, and young people posed probing questions on how the radio programme could amplify issues such as the cost of living, accountability and daily survival in crowded urban spaces.
Across both the peri-urban and inner-city communities, a common theme emerged: a strong desire to be heard. Organisers noted that regardless of location, residents are eager for inclusive platforms that capture their experiences and connect them more directly to civic dialogue and governance.
