Finally, Makinde Reacts to Appeal Court Judgment

The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has described the current political situation within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a challenging period for both the party and democracy in Nigeria.
Makinde made the remarks while reacting to the Appeal Court judgment concerning the party’s Ibadan convention. According to the governor, the unfolding political developments are unprecedented in the country’s democratic history.

He noted that consultations with political stakeholders and individuals who have been part of Nigeria’s political evolution revealed that the current political landscape is unlike anything previously experienced.
“It is a challenging period for us as a party, and also a challenging period for democracy in Nigeria,” Makinde said. “I have been talking to people of knowledge who have been involved in the political evolution of this country, and none of them has witnessed a political landscape close to what we are witnessing today.”
Makinde, who spoke alongside the Governor of Bauchi State and Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed, said the party’s leaders remain undeterred despite the situation.
The governor maintained that both leaders are committed to standing on the side of the people and defending democratic values regardless of the prevailing political challenges.

“I can only say on behalf of all—okay, we are only two governors remaining,” Makinde said while gesturing to Mohammed, “but we are not bothered. I can say personally and on behalf of my chairman that when the story of this period is told, when the story of democracy in Nigeria is told, they will find us on the side of the people.”
Makinde expressed optimism that the current difficulties would eventually pass, urging party members and political actors to remain mindful of the roles they play and how history will judge their actions.
“This period will also go away; it will also pass away. Whatever roles we want to play as individuals and collectively as a party, we must be conscious of what history is going to record against or for us in this period,” he added.
